Yam Char Restaurant @ Chinatown, Singapore

This should have been posted long long ago but due to the terrible connections at some of the places I ventured to, it’s hard to do so. Some time back, StrippedSteph and myself ventured to this place in Chinatown, Singapore in search of lunch. She knows how much I love my Dim Sums and how I want to finally be ordering food in Cantonese instead of in my oh-so-wonderfully-crappy mandarin.
The venue of our choice? The Yam Char Restaurant, located in the heart of the Chinatown, about 5minutes slow walk from the MRT station. We got there at about 3pm after checking out some of the shopping complexes in Orchard Road area (Doing the touristy thing) and we were just in time for their High Tea Buffet. At SGD18.80 per person (SGD14.80 for the kids), it’s quite a reasonably priced buffet.

Selection wise, they have a wide range of choices for you to consume from. As we sat down, the waitress kindly gave us a menu to have a look at our choice for the day. Browsing through 2 pages of finely printed text when you’re hungry isn’t what I want so while Steph looked, I just wait for the food cart to arrive. All the following photos was shot using the Fujifilm F100d. Didn’t bring along my bulky dSLR cause Steph say we’re going out on a date and not out for a photoshoot.

I’m not putting down a lot of descriptions for the photos cause there was just too much food that we ate and we didn’t really take photos of all the food. This is what happened when we enjoy ourselves at lunch/dinner and forgot to take photos for blogging sake. The texture and taste wise, the dim sum served was excellent, served steaming fresh from the kitchen to the table, especially for those that pre-ordered before the buffet carts came out. So far, I would say this place served the better dim sum among the few restaurants I’ve eaten at. I won’t say it’s the best as I’ve yet to experience those that would be on par if not better than the ones I’ve eaten in Malaysia.

Is it worthwhile to go to that place and eat? I would say yes, you won’t be rushed out of the restaurant by the waiters and they take the time to properly explain to you what you want to know rather than just a one-liner and expect you to understand. Whatever that is ordered would be quickly served even though there’s a lot of customers in the restaurant. We don’t see that anymore these days in many especially the more expensive places I’ve eaten at. Also, it’s a nice comfortable place to just sit around, relax, have some tea, like the cantonese says. Just’s go Yam Char.
