In what is possibly Formula 1′s most outrageous news story of the year, AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes, whose Tune Group finances the Lotus team, has accepted a challenge laid down by Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson – whichever man is beaten by his rival F1 team next season will dress as a stewardess for his competitor’s airline.

With Fernandes and Branson now both owners of a Formula 1 racing team as well as an international airline, Branson – who has already said that he would like to see more fun in the sport – set the challenge at Virgin Racing’s team presentation on Tuesday.

“Bring it on, the sexier the better,” was Fernandes’ immediate Wednesday response as the two teams look to do battle both on and off the track next season. ‘The Lotus F1 Racing team, of which Fernandes is Team Principal, has even taken the liberty of picking out a lovely crew uniform for Branson,’ reads a response on the Lotus website.

“It’s quite fitting, don’t you think?” Fernandes continued. “Our passengers will be delighted to be served by a Knight of the Realm. But, knowing Richard, the real challenge will be to prevent him from asking our guests ‘coffee, tea or me?’ That would be scary.”

Hopefully for F1 fans, as the lights go out in Bahrain next March, ‘Doors to manual and cross check’ will not be an added feature at pit-stops.
