Wednesday Night Salsa @ Aliyaa

It has been awhile, almost 2 years since I last step into a dance hall to dance. The last time I stepped into a dance club would be about a year and half back and that was also for a meeting and not really for dancing. And so, last night, I decided to head over to Aliyaa to dance a bit and try to get my groove back.

Without practice and all, I can say that my brain had purged all dance steps that I knew. But never know if we don’t try right? Didn’t realized so many people still remember who I am, quite happy too that I do remember some of the more basic moves even though the more complex stuff is out of the window.

Quite a few friends did ask, is it easy to learn salsa? The answer is Yes. Picking up the basic is quite easy and once you’ve gotten the basic grind into your brain, then it’s off to the styling and more complex moves. That’s when things get tricky, of course, once you’ve managed to pull it off. The satisfaction of knowing that you’ve got that move locked in is very satisfying. Sometimes, to the extend that you’d want to immediately hit the dance floor to apply it into your repertoire of moves.

One other important thing for the guys, truth be told, not many guys still pick up dancing as in proper ballroom or latin dances. And it does impresses the girls when you are at a club and a nice number is played and you are like the 1 person out of the many in the room that is able to dance. Even if you ain’t the best looking guy in the whole room, girls will be flocking over to you cause you’re able to dance. It’s been proven!

This proven theory of course does not apply when it comes to a dance hall where the guys and girls there do know how to dance. But I believe that at the end of the day, dancing isn’t about showing off how technical a person can be or how stylish the person can dance. I believe that at the end of the day, it’s how much the partner you’re dancing with is enjoying dancing with you. I prefer watching a couple on the dance floor laughing at themselves for making mistakes and enjoying themselves than to see a couple with a very serious look pulling off moves after moves. The joy is not there, I don’t feel it and I doubt other people could feel it too when it comes to enjoying the dance.

So… do you know how to dance?
