The Sultan of Selangor Cup: Singapore vs Selangor

If you’ve been following local football since the good old days when Singapore was still part of the M League and Malaysia Cup series, you’d know how strong the rivalry between Singapore and Selangor is. Each game held at the various stadiums are constantly packed with people.

These days, the only time we see these two teams battle it out is in the Sultan of Selangor Cup games held once a year between the two clubs. 2008 see the Cup going back to Selangor and this year, the Singapore team was quite dominant and the cup goes to Singapore. For Selangor fans, we see it as allowing the Singapore team the thrill of holding it for a year before we take it back. :p

I was lucky enough to be able to watch this action packed game recently when it was held in Jalan Besar, Singapore. With bus loads of Selangor fans, we arrived early and soon packed the stadium before the start of the games between the Singapore Veterans and Selangor Veterans. Seeing stars of yester-years coming together to give the fans a spectacle that shows us why they were the fan favorites back in their peaks.

Sad to say though, after 10min into the game, Dollah Kassim of Singapore collapse at the side line after he got subbed. It’s been 2 weeks now and he is still in Coma in a hospital in Singapore. His family has requested that they are given some privacy and allow Dollah to recover. My prayers to his speedy recovery. He’s getting better at last check so hopefully we’ll have some good news in the next couple of days.

The Singapore Veterans won the game through Penalty as the Selangor Veterans came back from a goal down to equalize in the 2nd half. The Singapore Selection through their foreign players gave the Selangor team a whopping. If you ask me, I’d say that it was the foreigners that won the game, not the Singapore National team (even though these foreigners are effectively playing for the Singapore National Team).

It was a night to remember, it’s been a long while since we last seen a stadium packed with Selangor fans in “Merah Kuning” and I can say that it was awesome.
