It’s the 25th SEA Games and it’s held at Vientiane, Laos. Even though the games had started some time back, the Opening Ceremony was only held last night (9th Dec).

The opening ceremony started at 5pm local Lao time with songs and music but officially started at 6pm with the two MCs counting down with the crowd in the National stadium.

Immediately after that, the band, flag bearers and the respective delegates from the participating countries start flowing into the stadium. With only 25 sports being played, we see less delegates by each participating country with the Laos contingent fielding the biggest group with 853 people.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Laos, Mr. Somsavat Lengsavad gave a good 10min speech before Mr. Choummaly Saiyasone, the President of Lao DPR officiate the opening of the SEA Games. This was followed by a 1min fireworks which felt more like 10sec.

Oath taking ceremony was next with Ms. Mayuree Phanouvong representing the athletes and Mr. Somphone Manykham on behalf of the referees. Torch relay by 8 pairs of SEA Games athletes ran 2 rounds around the stadium before ending with a guy in a traditional costume representing their legendary hero, Sin-Xay fire an arrow which lit up the main torch at the stadium to kick start the rest of the celebrations.

The Cultural performance was very colorful and beautifully done but check out the 5th item which is about the modern day Sin Xay. This was followed by a dance number by youths and the celebration ends with a song performance by some of Laos’ popular performers and a 1min long firework display
