Salsa in Malaysia: Salsa Social Dance Venues
Here’s a compilation of venues to go when you are looking for a place to dance salsa. These are venues that I personally know of so if there’s any other places that is hosting any Salsa Social parties on the days I’ve not stated down, please let me know. I’m listing it down from Monday to Sunday rather than having specific dates of the month as the days and venues has remained consistently the same throughout each week when it comes to Salsa Social parties.

Christmas 2010 Salsa Social
It’s been 2 years since I seriously celebrated Christmas and I thought this year will be the same, staying home, sleeping early and just bumming around the house on Christmas day. Well, that didn’t really happen as the week was spend going from place to place for some Salsa Social.

Even though the community of salsa dancers is still small, I would say it is growing rapidly with more new faces appearing at the clubs every day. In KL, the Christmas celebration started from Wednesday at Aliyaa til Sunday at Shivz with tunes ranging from salsa to bachata and the occasional zouk tunes. (more…)
Salsa Fever @ Love The World, Singapore
Thanks to Claudie, I got to know about this place at the Singapore Flyer known as Love The World and on Tuesdays, they will have Salsa Night! The usual type of music played there are rock and ballads I think. Anyway, it’s all good as now, I have a place I can go to for my dancing fix on Week Days when I’m in Singapore!

1st Impression I got when I step in, the place was quite quiet but then it’s common in most salsa clubs that the 1st hour is the most quiet while everyone is making their way to the place. By 9pm, the place was starting to fill up with dancers and music starts to play. (more…)
Lambada-Zouk & Bachata Night @ Shivz
Just recently Shivz opened it’s doors to the salsa community on Thursdays for a weekly session of Lambada-Zouk and Bachata just for the crowd that’s into those genre of dance instead of the more common Salsa, Bachata or Merenggue. I don’t dance Lambada-Zouk, tried to pick it up but crashed and burnt, but seeing how there’s a strong following by a small group of people to this genre of dance and how gracious Shivz is by having a night just for it on top of the salsa night on Sundays, I decide to volunteer my services.

So yeah, you can catch me at Shivz on Thursday as well where I’ll be spinning a lot of Lambada Zouk tunes on top of some Bachata and a few Salsa thrown in (so that I can at least have a few dance myself). The majority type of Zouk I play on these nights is the Neo-Zouk where the music is mixed and fused with trance and modern music with basic Zouk beats, the original French or Portuguese lyrics are ommitted as Neo-Zouk ethuthiasts have better connection with transcendental music. For the you, especially with this genre of dance and all these new terms you’re reading, you can swing by at 9.00pm onwards where Cherie Thum would conduct a small introductory workshop for beginners to the world of Lambada-Zouk, more precisely, the Porto Seguro-style. Photos from Clive’s 2nd Anniversary & Absolut Rock On – Men’s Night
It was a night of 2 parties and it all started at 8pm…. well, as usual, invite says 8pm but gate only opens an hour later. The first party we hit was the CLIVE’s 2nd Anniversary Party. You know what the funny thing is when we reach? The line to the VIP counter is longer than the line to go into the main floor. Might as well do away with the VIP area since everyone’s getting there anyway right?

After getting registered and stepping in, it was quite apparent where all the crowd is congregating. Yup, the VIP area, it was packed! So packed that it’s hard for a person to walk from one end of the room to another without knocking someone over doing it. After mingling around for awhile catching up with some old friends in that area, we decide to hit the main room where there was more space. In fact, the ‘celebrities’, models and a few others decided to just hang out at the main floor where there’s more space and we can actually see what’s going on better than be at the VIP area.
