My Journey In Photography

Something just sparked in me while reading some fellow photographers’ blog about their progress in the world of photography. I found myself asking the question How far have I gone with what I’ve done?  It might not be the wisest or smartest question out there but truly, eventually, this question needs to be answered. Right?

My interest in photography was sparked by my dad when he used to bring out his SLR to everywhere we go and capturing every images we could to print as memories of our journey as a family. I started picking up from there, eventually owning my own Nikon FM10 in college as part of my studies. Taking photos of this and that, not only as part of my assignments but also for fun. Eventually, I ‘graduated’ to the world of film as in moving images and found myself working in a production house producing TV programs for TV stations. (more…)

The one seen on this photo is part of a collection that my family possesses, no longer in use, it’s more of a decorative piece now. Have you seen one before this?

Hennessy Artistry @ Orange Club

Hennessy Artistry featuring Shayne Ward, The DEY and Until June as well as DJ Tom Price has come and gone. I’m sure those who went enjoyed themselves tremendously and those who didn’t go wished they could have gone. As for myself, it was a memorable night throughout. This i consider a long and photo heavy post, so you’ve been warned.

The Hennessy Girls n Me

Firstly, I reached there about 7.15 with Freaky and Dinnas as I informed 15 photographers both experienced and new to attend this event as a field trip to learn about event photography. It might look easy and all but it really isn’t especially if you’re working with the most basic of gears which doesn’t help with it’s less than good compatibility with low lights. It’s either sacrificing the noise or go low on the shutter speed to get the shots we want.

About 8.15pm, that’s when every 15 photographers registered to attend the event showed up. A Quick briefing and a walk-about of the venue was done and the photographers was then encourage to fire away! As for myself, I go about grabbing some shots as well to keep myself entertained. The crowd started to build up even from 7.30ish but the doors to the venue was still blocked until 9pm before the crowd was invited to register themselves at the counters to get into the venue. The performing celebrities showed up about that time as well and with over 20 photographers there. They were mobbed around the vanity board to pose and all. I didn’t bother to try and grab shots as it’s more of a priority to allow the other 15 take what they want. (more…)

World Lupus Day @ 10th May ’08

Posted By Michael Yip / May, 9, 2008 / 0 comments

Come the 10th of May, drop by 1Utama and head over to the 1st floor of the New Wing.

Why? Simple, I’m going to be there (you can ask around if you’re wondering where am I) and it’s for a good cause and it’s happening from the time 1Utama opens at 10 until it closes.

On that day, is the World Lupus Day where awareness regarding the disease is brought to the public for them to know that not only AIDS and Cancer can kill, so will this other form of disease.

Now, a brief background on Lupus or SLE.

What is SLE?
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, auto-immune disease of unknown cause where the patient’s body makes large quantities of blood proteins called anti-bodies that react against the person’s own tissues.

History
Lupus is the Latin word for wolf. Erythematosus means red rashes. In 1851, Dr. Cazenave discovered red rashes on a patient’s face that looked like wolf bites. He named the rash Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE).

In 1885, Sir William Osler recognised that many people with lupus had a disease involving not only the skin but many other organs or systems. He named the disease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

Types of Lupus
Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE)
• Only involves the skin
• Rarely spreads to other organs

Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
• Can spread to other organs
• Can be fatal

Statistics
About 90% of SLE sufferers are women while about 10% are men and children.
About 90% of women with SLE are in their childbearing years, within the range of 15 to 50 years old.
Ratio of SLE sufferers :
In the West, among Afro-Carribeans 1 in 250-500 people
USA – 1 in 2,000 people
China – 1 in 1,000 people

In Malaysia, it is estimated that more than 10,000 people have been diagnosed with SLE over the past 30 years. However, this number may be only the tip of the iceberg. The Malaysian SLE Association believes that there are many more SLE sufferers in Malaysia who have not been diagnosed.

Now with all that said, what I’d love you to do is, come by, donate what you feel is worth of these victims and also talk to them and know first hand what and how they lead their lives with these form of disease. There is nothing to fear but more to learn and through these experience, the most important thing that I hope would happen is that the awareness about Lupus (SLE) would grow even more and something can/would be done to help the victims both in finding a cure as well as to help them live a normal life.

Do your share for charity. Thank You
