Jenson Button had strong doubts over his chances in the Bahrain Grand Prix, especially after qualifying fourth on the grid in qualifying. Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock were the men to steal the show on Saturday by taking Toyota’s first ever front row lockout, with Sebastian Vettel’s heavier fuelled Red Bull lining up third. Button’s second win from two races this year confirms a 100% wins to starts ratio for the new Brawn GP team; starting from pole position, the Englishman found himself fourth after the first corners as he swapped positions with Nico Rosberg, as the German’s Williams launched off the grid to slide down the inside of Turn 1. Fernando Alonso also made a good start by leapfrogging from ninth to the third on the grid.
With rain having threatened all weeked, Räikkönen and Ferrari were the first to jump by fitting the car with extreme wet tyres when needing to pit for fuel; with no drops falling for a number of laps, the Finn soon plummeted from fifth to fifteenth. By the time the rain did come, the 2007 champion was already one and a half minutes behind the leaders, with his tyres destroyed. (more…)

Australian GP Result
A fantastic win by Jenson Button, a win that’ll make all his critics eat their word. Rubens Barrichello made it a Brawn GP 1 2. In one of the most anticipated World Championships ever in Melbourne after a dramatic winter break, the race proved to be one for the history book with an unfamiliar front row in the make of 2 Brawn GP cars.
Lewis Hamilton started the race at the back of the grid following a five-place penalty for a gearbox change. Toyota elected to start its cars from the pit lane when Glock and Trulli were also relegated for running illegal, flexible rear wing elements during qualifying.
Barrichello made a bad start while Button pulled away comfortably from the rest of the field. Rubens’ action created a chain reaction at Turn 1 as contact from Kovalainen’s McLaren pushed Rubens into Webber’s Red Bull which forced the Australian into Nick Heidfeld. The BMW’s spin, in turn, forced Alonso’s Renault into evacuation across the grass. Webber’s resultant half-spin in the middle of the pack saw him finally collected by Kovalainen, putting Heikki out of the race at the end of the lap with the Red Bull and BMW also out of contention for the remainder of the afternoon
Massa was third for Ferrari during the opening laps while Räikkönen was battling it out for fourth with Kubica. The first of two safety cars was deployed when Kazuki Najajima lost control of his Williams, putting two wheels over the kerb of Turn 4 – the Japanese driver suffered a heavy impact as the car’s front end took off briefly after contact with the concrete wall and a subsequent double spin.
