A guide for expatriate drivers in Malaysia

Here’s some tips for foreigners wanting to drive in Malaysia, here are some rules. Written by David Astley who believed he at last worked out the rules of the road in Malaysia . For the benefit of expatriates living in Malaysia , and the 50% of local drivers who acquired their driving licences without taking a driving test, here’s what he has to share:

Q: What is the most important rule of the road in Malaysia?
A: The most important rule is that you must arrive at your destination ahead of the car in front of you. This is the sacrosanct rule of driving in Malaysia. All other rules are subservient to this rule.

Q: What side of the road should you drive on in Malaysia?
A: 99.7% of cars drive on the left hand side, 0.2% on the right hand side, and 0.1% drive in reverse (be on the look out for drivers reversing at high speed in the left hand lane of freeways, having just missed their exit). Therefore on the basis of ‘majority rules’, it is recommended that you drive on the left. However, be aware that only 90% of motorcyclists travel on the left hand side – the other 10% ride in the opposite direction or on the sidewalk. Fortunately, motorcyclists travelling in reverse are rarely seen. (more…)

Onward to Vientiane!

The Opening ceremony’s about 24 hours away. If you’re seeing this page, that can only mean one thing. I’ve gone to Laos and for the next 2 weeks. I’m going to be there cheering the Malaysian team on, irregardless of how many medals they are bringing back.

An estimate of 300 to 400-member Malaysian contingent is already there getting themselves used to the food, weather and the sports village. 2 games: the Water Polo and Football has already begun.

Chef-de-Mission for Laos, Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz had indicated that the Malaysian contingent would participate in 21 of the 25 sports hosted. I wonder how many medals will the Malaysian team bring back. No matter what, I’m looking forward to seeing our boys and girls do well. Will try to update with details and photos here (if I can find an internet connection to upload them). If I can’t get online, I’ll see you guys and update mikeyip.com in about 2 weeks time. (more…)

My View on Internet Filtration by M’sia’s Government

I must say that the recent bashing our dear YB Rais Yatim is getting from the Internet community is surely giving his old body a few bruises here and there. If you’ve no idea what I’m talking about, I’m talking about the Internet filtration that the Government is mulling over. Yes, it’s similar to China’s abandoned “Green Dam” project, but then, we also have to look at it in the bigger picture.

Am I siding his decision? I would say no, what for? You can’t get into your favorite porn sites? Go through one of those proxy sites you could access to (I’ll post several links at the bottom of this post for you to use). You can’t access your favorite anti-establishment websites like RPK’s Malaysia-Today site/blog/portal because it’s bashing the government left right and center? Go ahead, use the proxy servers. After all, the government forgot that they even pen down the thing about No Censorship to the Internet, so why not, we as Internet users also go about working around the censorship? (more…)

Lawyer Joke

It’s the weekend, it’s all fun and games and to most of you, time to party!, here’s some jokes to share with those of you who’s just waking up, getting ready for Hennessy Artistry or whichever party you’re going to.

Abdul grew up in Kota Baru, a town located on the East Coast of Malaysia, and then moved away to Kuala Lumpur to do his law degree in order to fill up the Bumiputera quota. He decided to come back to Kota Baru, because he could be a big man and really wanted to impress everyone.. So he returned and opened his new law office.

The first day, he saw a man coming up the sidewalk. He decided to make a big impression on this new client when he arrived. As the man came to the door Abdul picked up the phone. He motioned the man in, all the while talking.. (more…)

Manchester United vs Malaysia – Photos from Field Level

The stadium wasn’t as packed as the Saturday game, must say that the Malaysian team wasn’t playing as well as the first game either. Here are some of my thoughts along with loads of photos.

The Starting 11

The defensive players held on tight to their positioning and did well even though 2 goals were scored against them. Can’t really compare much between a team that’s been playing together for an entire season and a team assembled 12 days prior to the game right? (more…)

10 husband but still virgin

It’s Sunday, heard a very good news of Man Utd sticking around in Malaysia for a tad longer due to the Jakarta Bombing. I’m not saying the bombing is good but it did helped in getting Man Utd to stick around Malaysia a tad longer and allowing me the chance to go watch them.

Anyway, since it’s a great Sunday, going to share with you another classic email funnies.

A lawyer married a woman who had previously divorced ten husbands.

On their wedding night, she told her new husband, “Please be gentle, I’m still a virgin.”

“What?” said the puzzled groom.

“How can that be if you’ve been married ten times?” (more…)

Much Talked About… Streamyx and the Malaysian English Education

If you don’t like to read about people’s rant, this is where you can take the step of hitting the back button on your browser or type a new URL on the address bar or click the X at the top right corner of the browser. You have been warned.

Now, to kick off this rant, the first thing I want to touch on is Streamyx and its excellent service and internet speed. If you’re from TM and think that I’m praising you, you’d best go back to school to learn some English and understand the idea of a sarcastic remark. Oh wait…. according to the Education Ministry, our English teachers are not proficient enough to teach English.

Anyway, like MOST Malaysians out there that uses the internet from home. We rely heavily on Streamyx for our broadband connectivity which is supposed to be fast. The keyword here is FAST, Streamyx is anything but fast. Sad to say, that’s the truth. Compare it with many other ISPs from around the world and you can have an idea of how wonderfully fast our speed is. Friends from all around the world talks about how their internet speed is affecting their work. Guess what? Their connection’s even faster than what Streamyx is pumping out. Don’t even have to go far; just look across the border to the tiny island down south of Malaysia. Internet connection in Singapore is fairly reasonable and priced cheaper (if you’re a Singaporean) than Streamyx too!

New Malaysian PM names New Cabinet Members

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Malaysia’s new Prime Minister announced his new 28-member Cabinet with 25 ministries that saw eight ministers dropped and seven new faces appointed at 3pm today.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who won the Umno deputy presidency in last month’s party elections, was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister. Najib, who took his oath of office as the new prime minister on April 3, also retained the finance portfolio which he has held since Sept 19 last year following the portfolio swap between him and former premier Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at that time.

Najib said that the new members of the administration were highly spirited and ready to serve. “I am confident that all of them share the same commitment to spur the nation towards excellence. This is our lineup and our team which reflects Malaysia’s plural society,“ he said when announcing the list at the Prime Minister’s Department, carried live on national television.

The new Cabinet also a reflection of the slogan “One Malaysia. People First. Performance Now” adopted by Najib’s administration. The eight dropped are Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar (Home), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (Tourism), Senator Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib (Rural and Regional Development), Senator Datuk Amirsham A. Malaysian GP Qualifying Result

With a later start compared to previous years, the rain didn’t show itself as the Qualifying session kicked off. A Qualifying full of drama as Button takes Pole again after Melbourne. Joining him on the front row is Toyota’s Jarno Trulli. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello were third and fourth, but grid penalties for both mean Toyota’s Timo Glock and Williams’ Nico Rosberg will form row two.Ferrari’s Raikkonen could only land himself in the 9th position while Massa qualifying in 16th. McLaren was 13th and 14th respectively after the controversial Melbourne GP still haunting them.

Button is looking set to show that the win at Melbourne is no fluke while Ferrari and McLaren will be looking to reclaim the throne that Brawn GP so comfortably control this season. Will the April 14th hearing regarding the diffuser affect how the 3 teams running the controversial diffuser perform? It’s all to watch for tomorrow. The Full result of the Qualifying is as follow… (more…)

Installing iPhone Apps

I’m posting this cause I was asked by not one, not two but quite a number of new iPhone users about how to install stuff into their iPhone. And so, the not so Tech Savvy person occasionally asked, how the heck do we install apps and games into the iPhone? Need to pay ah? Which Website to go? Well, hopefully this will help answer your questions.

Cool Jedi pic from Gizmodo :)

Well, if your phone’s jailbroken and you want to install free or paid apps without paying for it, you can give it a try with this helpful tip by Gizmodo. If you’re new iPhone users with phones purchased from an official iPhone dealer or Telco like Singtel (for Singapore) or Maxis (for Malaysia). You can just go straight into the App Store button on your iPhone and shop away. Look for the icon on the first page of your iPhone. (more…)

iPhone 3G coming to Malaysia!

Almost 1 year after Singapore brought in the iPhone 3G to their citizens, Maxis finally announce that they’ll be bringing in the iPhone 3G 8GB for free on its iValue 4 plan from March 20.

Maxis chief executive officer Sandip Das said in a statement: “We are very pleased to launch iPhone 3G in Malaysia as many of our mobile users have been eagerly anticipating this revolutionary phone.

They will really enjoy the many embedded and downloadable applications from the first time they use iPhone 3G.” You can read more about it here.

Maxis will offer the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G models with four specially designed postpaid plans called iValue, all of which are voice-data bundled price plans, starting from RM100 per month.

I’d say it’s about time they bring it into Malaysia. I guess like the saying goes, it’s better late than never. Right?

The Stupidity of Malaysian Muslim

I read this posting by Raja Petra at about how some Malaysia muslim are just plain darf. It really makes me wonder since when our Malay Muslim had become the expert when it comes to the language of the Quran and dictate to others what can and cannot be done or said.

Have a look at the posting here by RPK.

Some Malays, PKR and PAS Malays included, are very narrow-minded and ignorant. And this is because they recite the Quran like parrots without understanding what they are reciting — mainly because they do not speak the language of the Quran.

Herald editor says ban on ‘Allah’ lifted with conditions

A church official says the government has lifted a ban on the use of the word “Allah” by Christian publications.

Rev. Lawrence Andrew, the editor of the Catholic Church’s Herald newspaper, said today the Home Ministry is allowing the publications use “Allah” to refer to God as long as they state that the material is only meant for Christians.

The controversy first broke out in late 2007 when the government banned the use of “Allah” in Christian Malay-language texts because it allegedly might confuse Muslims.

The Herald has challenged the ban in court and argued the Arabic word is a common reference for God that predates Islam and has been used for centuries as a translation in Malay. — AP, 26 Feb 2009 (more…)

HKFDC New Action Initiative

The Kong Kong Film Development Council launched the Hong Kong Film NEW ACTION in December 3rd, 2008. HKFDC then followed it up with a large scale promotion plan to develop the Hong Kong film market in mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore and lastly in Malaysia.

I am glad that I got the chance to be part of this initiative when HKFDC came to Malaysia this week. It’s not often we get to talk to the Hong Kong directors, Producers as well as Industry Veterans all within the same platform. On Thursday, the HKFDC organized a dinner at The Boulevard Hotel to bring together fellow counterparts from the Malaysian Film and Broadcasting industry. A time when peers from both country could sit down and talk over a nice casual dinner. (more…)

Teachers going Mad with English?

I read with intrigue about teachers in Malaysia going mad teaching subjects in English. If you’ve been following this ‘drama’, you’d know that our teachers have been complaining about how hard it is to teach both Mathematics and Science in english. If you’ve no idea what I talked about, here’s some of the news links. The latest on in The Star, one from back in December and this is another one from Bernama of a group that wants to abolish the teaching of both subjects in english.

Now, I don’t blame them for wanting to abolish this stupidity, why? It’s making them stupid and in turn, it’s making the students learning from them stupid. It’s true, how many Malay teachers you know can speak proper english? I do not know alot of Malay school teachers but I know enough to realized that only 2 out of 10 could speak proper english but then, they are assigned to subjects that doesn’t need them to speak in english. I’m not saying that I speak fantastic english cause I don’t. If you’ve followed me long enough, you know that I’ve tons of grammatical errors in everything I said or type. Not that I’m complaining, it’s a blog anyway, not something that people use as reference. (more…)

Chap Goh Meh

It’s the last day of Chinese New Year, the 15th day of the Lunar New Year. One of the major celebration held this day is known as the Chap Goh Meh (十五暝). The term is from the Hokkien dialect and refers to the fifteenth day of the first month, which is the occasion of the first full moon of the New Year.

The occasion is marked by feasting and various festivities, including the consumption of tangyuan. In traditional Chinese culture, it is also celebrated as the Lantern Festival or the Shang Yuan Festival. In Southeast Asia, however, it coincides with the Chinese Valentine’s Day. It is also when young unmarried women gather to toss tangerines into the sea, in a hope that their future spouse will pick it up. In the past, this was also the only day that unmarried ladies could be seen with their partners.

Christmas came early thanks to Nuffnang SG

Yup, you see it right. Nuffnang Singapore organized the vPost Nuffnang Christmas party at DXO last night and it was the bomb! With the loudest noise coming from the Malaysian Camp. Yup, we did Malaysia proud, well… I felt that I did. StrippedSteph and I got there by 6, met up with the bunch of Nuffies from Malaysia, catch up on things and then proceed into the venue.

At the Photo Op

Boss Ming, taikor of Nuffnang SG.

Malaysia won the N.U.F.F.N.A.N.G spelling game (where we have to seek out the real Nuffies with the respective alphabets to win) by 3 to 2, it was a close call indeed but WE WON! I believe Malaysia also walked home with the most prizes last night too! (This do sound like I’m trying to create War between Nuffnang Malaysia and Singapore eh?) Even in terms of organized events, Nuffnang Malaysia tops Nuffnang Singapore by 3 events to 1 with the Christmas party being the first one so far. Quoted from Boss Ming “Nuffnang Malaysia might be leading in terms of organized events but Singapore shall not be far and we are looking at over taking that number very soon.” (more…)

Chelsea vs Malaysia

The final score was Chelsea 2 – 0 Malaysia. For those of you who still lives in the caves, yes, Chelsea (not the Clinton girl) came to Malaysia and entertained an almost packed stadium to some english style football against our Malaysian selection which put up a valiant fight.

The Malaysian keeper made some pretty good saves to keep his goal mouth out of the onslaught of Chelsea with only 2 goals due to defensive errors. Our midfield worked hard to stop the advancing english team but sadly, our forwards’ finishing power was pathetic. Out of the tries they made, only 2 connected with the keeper and I doubt the keeper even felt any force in the ball unlike those Canonball shots that an english footballer can produce.
