Salsa Social @ Penang
Since I started getting active dancing Salsa about 3 months back, I’ve been getting a constant flow of messages from random people asking me about where to go for salsa when they are in this particular area or in that particular area. Well, for those of you heading up to Penang, hope this helps.

I was in Penang during the 2nd weekend of July on an impromptu road trip (which I shall blog about later on), and one of the mission I had in mind was the visit the local salsa clubs there after promising some of the Penang dancers that I’ll be back after the 2008 Salsa Congress which was held in Penang.

Well, it’s 2010, way too long a wait and so there I was, blasting numerous messages out via Facebook and smses informing all those that I’ve kept in touch with that I’ll be up in Penang and would love to check out the salsa clubs there if they are still active. The person I got in contact with and one who so kindly waited for us to arrive to Penang was Yvonne Tang, she lives on the mainland side of Penang but made the trip over to the island and waited for us.

The destination was the Sake Room and Lounge which is quite near to the Sunway Carnival Mall. By day, it’s a restaurant serving japanese cuisine and by 10pm, the salsa music starts and the dancing crowd starts to trickle in. Food is still available of course so those who just want to come in, eat and watch others dance can do so while those who wants to dance has a nice little dance floor to dance on.

As we got there quite late, the crowd had already trickled down to a small group but dance is still dance, nothing is going to stop us from dancing even if there’s only the 2 of us.

And on the 4th Friday of every month (until further notice), Salsa Night is at Hai Nam Town, located next to QE2 (church pier around Jetty area). Dancing starts at 10pm as well and there’s a cover charge of RM11 for 1 non-alcoholic beverage upon entry. This place used to be more active where Salsa Night is every weekend but due to the dwindling crowd, like most places, they have to do the sensible thing to keep their own business afloat.

Nevertheless, with the right support, I’m sure the people there will keep on dancing and dancers traveling the globe will also take their time to pay those places a visit. If you’re traveling to Penang and want to get in touch with the dancers there to go dancing, do drop me a message and I’ll hook you guys up. It’s also to provide some form of security as it wouldn’t be nice for me to publish personal mobile numbers here.

Hello,
I am a casual dancer, not professional. I will be visiting Penang in October for vacation and was wondering if there is any good place to dance salsa or any Latin dance? venue and time? and what to expect. Thank you.
