The party atmosphere was apparent when I got to RSC as the Jonah Jones Rugby Sevens was on the way both on Saturday and Sunday. Of course, I was there to support the Dogs as they are the home team and in top form to win the much prized Jonah Jones 7s trophy which they last won back in 1972. That’s a long time to wait for the title and it felt just right for this weekend to be the weekend.
The matches was fast and furious and the rain didn’t dampened everyone’s spirit. In a way, we partied all the way through from morning til evening, no matter if it’s rain or shine. Even better when it rained cause the kids and some of us adults ran wild playing in the muddied field.
Royal Selangor Club (RSC) went on a rampage to bag a hat-trick of titles at the 48th Guinness Jonah Jones Rugby Sevens at the RSC Sports Annexe in Bukit Kiara yesterday. RSC emerged champions in the prestigious Club, women’s and Heavyweight categories.
The only exception was the Colts section, where Tsunami SSTMI beat archrivals Majlis Sukan Politeknik 21-17 for the title. The Club category triumph was the icing on the cake for RSC as the last time they won the title was way back in 1972. RSC Dog outplayed visitors Hong Kong Lion 26-15 in the final.
RSC coach Michael Lai was simply ecstatic. “We couldn’t have asked for a better showing. It’s awesome winning three of the four titles,The club players comprised many internationals and they were hungry for success.”
RSC Dingoes humbled Hong Kong Development 15-5 to lift the women’s title for the second time since winning it in 2008. Earlier, RSC Old Dog emerged champions in the Heavyweight category played on a round robin format. They first thrashed NS Legends 21-0 before completing their onslaught against Buttercookies 19-0 and Air France 29-0.
Congratulations boys, the celebration
