Perak State Government Saga

The current hot buzz that we are getting in Malaysia is the situation within the Perak state government. 4 members of the Pakatan Rakyat government had decided to be independent and pledge their loyalty to Barisan National as independent.

With this turn of event, the Barisan National gained the majority needed to form a new Perak Government and proceed to seek an audience with the Sultan of Perak. You could read more about the updates here. But then wait a minute, the Pakatan Rakyat team is crying foul and does not want to accept defeat. They have no plans to step down from their position and accept defeat, maybe because they have tasted the sweet fruit of being in power and does not want to surrender that luxury that they have only just gotten used to?

Pakatan Rakyat beaten in the defection game? The King of Frogs (Anwar Ibrahim for all of you that’s lost in the world of Malaysian Politics) once (or was it constantly reminding us) mentioned that more Barisan National would join the Pakatan Rakyat umbrella since the general election. So what happen now? Some said that Anwar Ibrahim was crying foul and say that the 3 assemblymen and 1 assembly woman shouldn’t be allowed to defect over to Barisan National. Why is it so? So it’s only right for Barisan National politicians to jump ship to Pakatan Rakyat and Pakatan Rakyat politicians are not allowed to jump ship to BN? Even as this is posted, all the Pakatan Rakyat power brokers are gathering in the official resident of the Perak Menteri Besar to try and find a solution to this sudden change. Anwar Ibrahim is also calling all Pakatan Rakyat supporters to go into the street and show their feelings regarding the decision by the Sultan to allow BN to form a new state government.

Will Pakatan Rakyat be able to do anything to regain their power again in Perak? At 10 am on Friday, Datuk Zambry Kadir, the Pangkor assemblyman will be sworn in as the new Perak Mentri Besar. Perak’s Sultan Azlan Shah had consented to Zambry helming the state, will Pakatan Rakyat do anything to stop the swearing in at that time? Maybe with a little Demonstration (normally when it comes to Pakatan Rakyat, demonstration doesn’t come in a small group) at the Palace in Kuala Kangsar? The police force are prepared to take action against demonstration should one happen at tomorrow’s swearing in. The State building had been sealed off by the police since early today even though the Pakatan Rakyat MB insist that he is still the legal Menteri Besar. Will he still consider himself the MB once the Sultan of Perak swear in the Pangkor Assemblyman?

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad commented on his blog that the state assemblymen should not be forced to resign their seats if they switch parties and there is no need for an anti-hopping law. He said the elected representative who defected could be punished at the polls. If the people are not happy, they could always not vote for those assemblymen in the next general election. True? At the end of the day, it’s still the people’s decision to choose the people they want and not a political party’s prerogative to decide who should be in or out.

With this turn of event, will the Pakatan Rakyat be worried about their other states as well?

If it’s cleaner, people won’t have to worry about their bread and butter.

@Harmony: Yup, politics, especially in Malaysia is one dicey game.

@Viciouscycle: Basically we are talking about the big bosses not taking care of their middle management so the middle management decide to go ply their trades elsewhere and their big bosses got really jealous that their mid management went to the rival. And now, you get all this childish cry looking for their mommy complaining that their prized possession was taken from them.
