MSN Message Spam from Friends

By Michael Yip | March, 24, 2009 | 9 comments

How many people out there kept receiving spam messages from their friends? Did you know that your friends might also receive the same thing from you? A Sample message being one that look like ….

or

I’m sure these are not the only type you received as there’s a lot more version out there.

Your friend didn’t do it on purpose and they didn’t have any intention to spam you at all. I’m sure you’ve tried scanning your computer for viruses and all but find no viruses infecting your system. I’m sure you even asked your friends to scan their system to make sure they didn’t have any bugs in their system also. Most likely, they weren’t even aware that they are send those messages to you. Especially since those messages was done when they were Offline. The best part? Even when you friend reply you telling you what happen, you will eventually never receive those offline message because “someone else” already receive those for you.

Well, if you didn’t know what happened, some time back, you might have accidentally clicked on one or two messages from friends telling you that you could check  “Who has blocked you in MSN Messenger” and clicking it, you signed in using, yup, you guessed it, your own username and password. Well, Congratulation, some one now knows your username and password. I personally have blocked some of my MSN friends because they kept spamming me everyday and not taking actions to solve it.

Solution! Yup, this is what people want to know, SOLUTION! I was browsing around online and all to check what causes the problem and few sites shows that the solution is very simple. Change and updates your Password for your hotmail or LIVE account!. MSN Lives uses the same password for your MSN, hotmail, Live Spaces, Messenger, so changing one would effectively changes password across the whole system for your MSN based programs. Logically, spammers would not be able to log into your account anymore to spam your friends.

Do yourself a favor, do your friends a favor. Take some action now and let’s fix this problem.If these people could log into your MSN account, imagine what else they could access to? If your friends inform you that you’re spamming them with all those messages, it’s time to change your password.

    @Lisalicious: I think this problem has been around for quite some time and not just when LIVE was released.

    @NatC: Make sure you spread the word and tell your friends to change their passwords, if not, it won’t work, you’d still get MSN messages spamming you.

    @Fumoffu: It’s never too late.

    @Angie Tan: Change Change Change!

    Yeah, it’s a problem with Yahoo Messenger as well. There are lots of emails floating around about “such and such group website for yahoo users” I think a lot of the emails direct you to a website called grouply.com or some crap.

    When I got to the page, it asked me for my yahoo info to find all my friends for their “service” I promptly reported the site to yahoo as a fishing site. Don’t think they ever did anything about it, I still get spam directing me there every once in a while in my mail. It claims to put all your yahoo groups on one page for you…which makes you want to ask, “why wouldn’t I use yahoo’s groups pages?”

    Someone I used to talk to years ago on yahoo all of a sudden started sending me spam in messenger (and I think in my mail). I ended up just blocking her, but I’m pretty sure her yahoo got hijacked. I bet she used one of those “services” like grouply.com.
