Road Trip – Malacca

It was an impromptu decision but felt that I needed it badly and so on a nice Friday morning, I went off on a Road Trip down to Malacca, the land of Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat and Satay Celup (a post on that will come shortly after this). As I wasn’t familiar with the Malacca town, I just spend most of the time going around Jonker Street for food. As usual, it’s less words and more photos for this post. After all, no one’s paying me to write a long ass essay about Malacca right?

Found a budget hotel near the town center, a short driving distance away from Jonker Street, checked in and went on my way to the heart of all place touristy. Even on a Friday, the place was packed with people walking about, hunting for food and buying up whatever souvenir Jonker Street has to offer.

You can say that the Tourist attraction part of Malacca starts from somewhere near the St. Francis Xavier Church, and from there, you basically can start venturing in towards the Portuguese Square where most tourists would just sit around, grab some photos to show that they are in Malacca and get suckered into buying some souvenir.

And here’s how one of those suckers tourists would look like, especially if they are moving about alone.

Even though the whole place has been turned into a circus tourist ground, it is still largely home to the people who grew up there all their lives. You can still see families going about doing their daily stuff ignoring all the tourists that walked past their home.

There’s no worries about getting lost in this town also as it’s basically a large square with most of the roads heading in one direction only. So a rule of thumb if you got lost in Jonker Street and not sure where you are, just keep heading left or right and keep in that direction until you come upon where you started. It goes the same when you’re driving around as well. Either that or you can stop by a temple and pray that someone will find you or ask the locals how to get out of that place.

You might think that Jonker Street is only alive during the day, well, you’re quite wrong if you think like that as the streets will come alive every night with stalls being set up, street performers coming out to show off and sell their wares and watering holes opening their doors to tourists and locals alike to quench their thirst.

You can actually tour around Jonker Street within a day if you’ve no intention of heading anywhere else around Malacca even though there’s a lot of historical sites. For me, half of the journey was spend on food so do bookmark my site and come back soon as there’ll be posts on the food I ate in Malacca.

Have you been to Malacca lately?
