Kampar and Yau Jar Kwai

2 weeks back, I headed back to Kampar for Ching Ming. It’s a time for family and paying respect to the ancestors. It was also one of the few times I get to go around Kampar town meeting up with some old family friends and relatives as well as checking out some of my old hang outs.

Since the establishment of UTAR in Kampar, the town has gone through some huge changes, new houses and shops sprouting all over like mushrooms. The town itself start to be more quiet too compared to before as more and more people are moving towards the new area nearer to UTAR.

On a brighter note, my cousin took over the family’s Yau Jar Kwai business as my aunt retires. A business started by my Grandfather, handed down to the next generation and now, the 3rd generation is taking over. Of course, the way it was prepared by my cousin isn’t as good as my aunt’s skills but we put it up to the fact that she’s still new at it. With time, she’ll get the hang of it and it’ll grow again.

After all, the stall is the Kampar community’s supply for Yau Jar Kwai. Everyone knows where the stall is and who runs it. It’s quite interesting to see how some people would just walk up to my cousin and treat her with the same respect they gave my aunt despite her young age. Since my Grandfather’s time, quite a few of my cousins has picked up the skill but they moved the operation out of Kampar into places like KL, Serdang, Kepong and Ipoh. Well, I’m quite happy that there’s finally someone to take over running the stall from the very place it was first started.

If you’re interested to give it a try, head on over to the Medan Selera. You can see a young lady with her husband and 2 children preparing it, right in the middle of the Medan Selera.
