Huge Tree Shaded Weld Quay Seafood

The talking point of this restaurant is the huge tree that this restaurant was build around as well as the use of an abandoned burnt down building as it’s site is another. Of course, the seafood is also important but still, any tourists that walked towards that restaurant would just gawk at the way the place was set-up before ordering any food.

The restaurant is just located opposite Penang Ferry Terminal (Jetty). Although customer is not allow to park their car in front of the stall, there are parking lots available down the corner. A Wide selection of fresh produce is placed before the customers so you can pick and choose what you want to eat, and if you want to stand around, you can watch them prepare and cook the dishes you ordered too.

The place was divided into 3 areas, the open seating near the kitchen where you get to watch the cooks prepare all your dishes and get the smell of cooking stuck to your shirt, the air-conditioned area and the abandoned building area.

It takes them about 10minutes from the time an order is placed to serving so it’s pretty quick considering that by the time you settle down to your seats, ordered the drinks and camwhore around the place and next thing you know, the waitress will come around with your food.

The 1st dish that arrived is the Fried Soft Shell Crab. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, prepared to a nice golden color and it was evenly cooked. One thing about soft shell crabs when is prepared this way is the texture of the meat as at the wrong temperature, you can get crispiness on the outside but it’ll be cold on the inside or cooked on the inside and slightly over fried on the outside (if there’s such a term). So kudos to them for this crispy dish which was wiped out within minutes.

Baked Ginseng Chicken, a small sized chicken served within a tin foil with a mild fragrance of herbs and ginseng. They don’t hold back on the use of herbs and from the taste of the soup, you can really taste the herbs that was used. It’s mild enough that even children could use the soup to mix along with their rice and the chicken was baked to the right texture that it’s easy to be torn off with just a scoop of the spoon yet retain the meatiness that it won’t fall apart easily.

The Deep-fried Dough Sticks with mayonnaise is a signature dish of the restaurant. The deep-fried dough stick, stuffed with fish cakes mixed with water chestnuts to give it that crunchy texture. It was nice but some commented that the mayonnaise should have been served separately as no everyone prefer to have so much mayo on their stick.

Salad Prawn, from those you picked fresh from their myriad of choices in the kitchen. Served fried with mayonnaise, I would say one of the better salad prawns I’ve eaten. They even decorated the dish nicely with the shell of the prawn heads and tails lining the side of the dish.

Clam Soup aka “Seong Thong Lala”, the soup dish that I would say I can get used to. I’m not a lala or a si ham person but I enjoyed the taste of the soup.

Steamed fish, after all, we are in a seafood restaurant right? It’s never complete if there’s no fish involved. With the wide varieties of fish you can choose from, this is our choice. Steamed to perfection, the meat was just at the right texture and easy to be stripped off the bones.

Definitely worth a revisit as the lunch was quite reasonably priced compared to many seafood restaurants around Penang.
