How to turn your state into a boring one
I read with interest with this news article from The Star just now and yes, I have a big grin on my face as I send a few text messages to some friends with CAP words (why can’t fonts be enlarged on phones?): i TOLD YOU SO!
The Pakatan Rakyat state government has imposed a blanket ban on such concerts until further notice because, it said, such shows could have a negative influence on youths.
“We do not condone any gelek-gelek (gyrating movements) on stage,” said state executive councillor Dr Ismail Salleh. (You can read the rest of the article here.)
Why did I do that? Well, do let me explain. A few friends of mine travelled back to Kedah during the G.E. to cast their votes and the night before, we sat down for some drinks and just some chit chats and naturally, I’d pop the question of the time. “If the Opposition comes into power, especially if PAS wins, they are bound to ban all form of entertainment in the state they rule, can you accept it?”
The answers I got from them is, “No lah, they won’t do that, now is modern society already, they are smart enough to keep the public happy and not go around cancelling out concerts and all that stuff. PAS definitely will try to keep all these entertainment around to keep their public happy wan…”
Of course, I said, “Dudes, if PAS wins, that’s the first thing that’ll happen, all form of entertainments that happened in the states they rules get kicked out of the states faster than you can spell your mother’s name.”
Defensively, in almost a unison reply after downing the 4th jug of beers… “They’re stupid if they do that… blocking all these entertainment for the non-muslims just because they are holier than thou (my bekside) will just push themselves further away from the voters eyes.”
Well friends,…. I TOLD YOU SO!
I’m just curious, is it really that bad an influence to have performances by artistes whether they are local or not when it’s done in states ruled by PAS? Why are they blaming concerts and all that entertainment for how the rotten apples turns out to?
Firstly, i feel that the youth these days are not corrupted by concerts, not at all! The influence comes from their peers and their family. The Core influence of how youths these days act growing up aren’t contributed by concerts or performances. It’s the people they mix with.
Secondly, i feel that if you want to ban a concert, don’t do that, ban the certain group of public you don’t want entering the venue! PAS’ officers have so much free time to go around making all those noise barking at people who doesn’t care about them, why not put these people to good use and place them as sentries at the concert venue to check and stop muslims from entering venues that is deem unfit for them. At least let the non-muslims enjoy a nice concert and all.
Third and last point, why are they stopping these artistes from earning a living? They don’t go robbing people or stealing from people, they are entertainers out to provide entertainment to the audience, they are not there to push drugs or encourage youths to consume alcohol. The Flower Power days are long gone. This is the 21st century for Christ’s sake! Stop living in the deserts and come back to reality. I can suggest this, allow performers to continue to perform on the stage, just let them know that if the lady performers want to perform, they have to confirm to your dress code, I’m sure the artistes would follow your rule, it’s either wear like the photo or don’t go into the state at all. So You allow the artistes to make the choice, wouldn’t it be fair to all?

Dr Ismail said concerts involving nasyid and patriotic songs were allowed.
I wonder how many people would show up for such concerts? I think if a mosh-pit were to start at the nasyid performance, they might even encourage it and then make a big shout out to everyone who cares to listen that they are going to ban Nasyid performances too! (That sounds like a bloody brilliant idea!)
The purpose of this post isn’t to tick anyone off, I’m just getting increasingly annoyed that barely a year after the last General Election, we get these idiots (that think they live in the middle east) going around banning all sort of stuff and getting alot of people out of businesses and jobs. Yes, I know quite a number of club performers that due to PAS winning the state from BN, get kicked out of the hotels they were performing in cause it’s BAD INFLUENCE! I wonder how long the hotels would last in those states as tourists find less and less appeals to go to those places.
Tourists can only visit landmarks for as long as they could but still want to go back to the hotel and relax and have a couple of jugs of beers in the hotel and watch some nice performance by the bands there. Not go back to the hotel to drink plain water and stare at the 4 walls that make up the place that was once a coffee lounge/bar.
When the head-count of tourists going into the state dropped, don’t go blaming other people for not organizing activities and events to drive the tourists into the state, blame yourself and your O-I’m-Holier-Than-Thou behavior. TQVM
