Crystal Jade @ Mid Valley Gardens New Menu Launch
Recently Crystal Jade @ The Midvalley Gardens launched their new set of menu with emphasis on the “Zong”, a type of chinese dumpling made from glutinous rice and bamboo leaves that is traditionally eaten during the Dragon boat festival which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. In the Western world, it’s more famously known as Chinese tamales.

After a short speech by the representative of Crystal Jade, we were served with the first dish, The Double-Boiled Shark’s Fin with Marinated Quail Soup. Not often we get to taste this form of preparation as it’s time consuming to prepare and Crystal Jade will be preparing this soup on a daily basis but to a limited number per day. A very revitalizing bowl of soup that helps warms up the heart.

Next, we were served a plate of Steamed Cod Fish with Shredded Mushroom & Dates. Fresh fish prepared just nice make this dish the favorite among the invited guest in this (traditional) media food tasting session. Some even went to the extend of finishing up the dishes that was prepared for the photo session.

A huge bamboo bowl was placed among us next and in it, the Steamed Chicken in Home Recipe. Using only free-range chicken, this dish was prepared in a very traditional manner with just the right amount of saltiness. As they were using free-range chicken, the meat is slightly more springy to bite.

The most coveted dish was served last before the dumpling demonstration starts, that is the Braised Whole Abalone with Fish Maw. A delicacy that Chinese would pay top dollar for was prepared just beautifully. A Very time consuming dish to prepare as the Abalone needs to be cooked to just the right texture, this is to allow the abalone be sliced easily with knives. The ones prepared by Crystal Jade was just perfect as I actually finished the one that was served to me, and I’m not a huge fan of abalone.

The Chefs of Crystal Jade made an appearance after the last dish was served and proceed to demonstrate how the “zong” was made. After a demo of preparing 3 dumplings, the members of the media was invited to try it out. As she later told us, it might look easy but to hold the bamboo leaves together and not let everything drops off before we can finish wrapping is no easy task.

After that, 4 types of dumpling was served to us, the Premium Abalone Dumpling, the Deluxe Conpoy Dumpling, the Meat & Salted Egg Yolk Dumpling and lastly, the Lotus Paste Dumpling. Even though there wasn’t many of us, we could still finish up a lot of dishes and that was followed by 4 different type of Dumplings.

A word of advice if you’d care to listen, if you don’t want to risk going to the restaurant and not able to taste any one of the dishes I covered above, please give them a call and make the necessary reservations. That way, Crystal Jade will be able to set a side the number of quantity necessary.
