Eric Li Jazz Latino @ Alexis Ampang
Over the weekend, Eric Li Jazz Latino performed at Alexis Ampang for 2 nights. Fans of Latin Jazz, Funk, Salsa was in for a treat as the Best in the business went to town and gave us a fantastic 2 night show. With Steve Thornton on Percussion, Marco Antonio Alonso on guitar plus a bassist and a drummer (My bad for not able to recall their names at this moment but I’ll put their names in once it comes back to me), Eric Li pulled out all the stops and got us onto our feet to dance with some fantastic music.

Popular tunes from the likes of Chucho Valdes and Irakere, Michel Camilo, Paquito D’Rivera, Dizzy Gillespie and many more was part of their playlist over the two nights and listening to these tunes Live was totally unreal for me. So much so that the group I was with practically danced to every single songs they played ignoring all the eyes staring at us (mostlikely wondering what the heck we are doing blocking their view).

(the crazy dancers I went to the Jazz Latino with)

(Eric Li)

(Marco Antonio Alonso)

(Steve Thornton)

(Mr. Drummer that I’m still trying to figure out and recall his name)

(Mr. Bassist and I can’t remember his name as well)
From the food Alexis served to the music, it was a perfect night out listening to the wonderful Jazz performance. Can’t wait for them to perform next. Will update you readers once I find out where they’ll be performing next so do follow me on Twitter or Facebook or even come back every now and then to check on any updates.
Salsa in Malaysia: Salsa Social Dance Venues
Here’s a compilation of venues to go when you are looking for a place to dance salsa. These are venues that I personally know of so if there’s any other places that is hosting any Salsa Social parties on the days I’ve not stated down, please let me know. I’m listing it down from Monday to Sunday rather than having specific dates of the month as the days and venues has remained consistently the same throughout each week when it comes to Salsa Social parties.

Malaysia World Latin Salsa Congress in 2012?
It’s been awhile since we last organized the Malaysia World Latin Salsa Congress (The last 1 was in 2009) and there’s also a number of dancers at the clubs and via facebook has been asking me whether we will be organizing another one anytime soon… So let’s have a vote, shall we? Let’s see what most of you guys want. Whether we should organize 1 next year or not? Let’s see what’s the result after a month and an announcement will be made after that whether a Salsa Congress will be on or not for 2012.

A Surprised Birthday Celebration @ Dance Spirit Co.
It was Fasil aka Salsa Spirit’s birthday on the 2nd and some of us who won’t be able to celebrate with him on Wednesday decide to have 1 at his studio where he was teaching. His students told him it’s just a small group of students get together to do some tossing of the yee sang (鱼生) since Chinese New Year’s just a few days away.

Those of us not part of the studio as well as his former students gathered together outside and proceed to sneak into his studio while he is distracted by his class. Plan worked perfectly, he completed his lesson at 10.30pm, came out, told the students to lets get the Lou Sang over with and before he know what happened, out we came singing a Happy Birthday song to him. Not sure whether he was surprised (or he might just be pretending…).

It is something different as it was a combination of celebrating his birthday as well as to celebrate Chinese New Year by tossing of the Yee Sang. There’s also some fortune cookies and I was quite amused by what was written on it. It was also a great time to catch up with some of the ex students of Dance Spirit as I haven’t seen them at the Social Salsa scene.

Can’t wait for more dancing and celebrations to come for 2011 and Happy Birthday again Fasil.

Christmas 2010 Salsa Social
It’s been 2 years since I seriously celebrated Christmas and I thought this year will be the same, staying home, sleeping early and just bumming around the house on Christmas day. Well, that didn’t really happen as the week was spend going from place to place for some Salsa Social.

Even though the community of salsa dancers is still small, I would say it is growing rapidly with more new faces appearing at the clubs every day. In KL, the Christmas celebration started from Wednesday at Aliyaa til Sunday at Shivz with tunes ranging from salsa to bachata and the occasional zouk tunes. (more…)
