ASIMO at 1Utama
Earlier today, I was at 1Utama for ASIMO’s opening ceremony as he will be in 1Utama for the weekend. Who would pass up an opportunity to see the one robot that could walk without any assistants, dance, run, even serve people with drinks?
No, robots from anime doesn’t count. Anyway, I’m amazed at the engineering behind ASIMO. During the introduction of ASIMO to the guests, media and contest winners, we could witness how ASIMO walk, run, talk (I think it’s all pre-recorded phrases though), lift and place items on table and even kick a ball.
The whole ceremony started with a quick speech by the boss of HONDA before some video montages showcasing some of the work that HONDA has done before ASIMO was introduced to the crowd, after a short performance from ASIMO, another video was played detailing the progress from the first robot HONDA designed to the current incarnation of ASIMO.
Was I impressed with what HONDA has achieved? You bet I am, even more so with ASIMO and what it could do. I can just see it now, in a few years time, the technology would get to such an extend where ASIMO could operate by itself without any pre-programming ala the movie AI. Well, it’s a fantastic dream I’m sure but it could also be scary if the technology falls on the wrong hand. Remember the movie TERMINATOR? Anyway, more photos from the event here.

This is so cool! ASIMO is helping scientists make new discoveries about walking so that people who can’t walk may one day use this technology.
It is kind of creepy though… Thinking about The Terminator.
