Air Hitam Asam Laksa @ Jalan Pasar, Penang

On the journey up towards Kek Lok Si, while we get near Jalan Pasar, our Penangite friend decide to pull us over to the side of the road, dangerously close to the T-junction where cars were squeezing by and the locals were busy going about doing their morning shopping at the wet market. All because of the Asam Laksa road side stall that was there.

Supposedly known as the famous Air Hitam Asam Laksa, it’s operation runs like clock work with each person assigned to a task of taking orders, preparing the ingredient, boiling the noodle and pouring in the soup and condiments and so on and so forth. At RM3 a bowl, it only comes in 1 size. If you want more, order 2. Simple concept and easier for their calculation. The prices has increased over the years but when it comes to food, we can be sure that those couple of cents increase will not hurt the pocket much.

Taste wise, maybe they have become too manufactured, it just taste like the usual Asam Laksa to me, can’t really make out what made this one stood out from the Asam Laksa we eat anywhere else.

Aside from the Asam Laksa, there’s also a drink stall next to it selling sugar cane drinks and so forth, the amazing thing is, there’s flies everywhere, on the grinder, on the sugar cane itself and all but just like the Asam Laksa stall, we see a steady flow of customers constantly going there to order drinks whether to drink there or to take away.

Of course, if you opt not to go for the sugar cane, there’s also can drinks available there.
